States Alphabetical Mess
- Code:
Sort based on numeric amount of characters doesn't work.
Illinois Washington Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Texas Massachusetts Michigan
8 11 7 8 10 8 11 5 13 9
Added each state total value Ex. Illinois =99 9+12+12+9+14+15+9+19=99 (using A=1,B=2, C=3)
99 130 84 79 88 83 127 69 168 64
Doesn't work
Trying to see if we used 1st 2nd 3rd character and so on... also tried from end of words...
Forward
1st 9-23-1-1-3-3-3-20-13-13
2nd 12-1-18-18-1-15-15-5-1-9
3rd 12-19-9-11-12-12-14-24-19-3
4th 9-8-26-1-9-15-14-1-19-8
5th 14-9-15-14-6-18-5-19-1-9
Backward
1st 19-14-1-19-1-15-20-19-19-14
2nd 9-15-14-1-9-4-21-1-20-1
3rd 15-20-15-19-14-1-3-24-20-7
4th 14-7-26-14-18-18-9-5-9
5th 9-14-9-1-15-15-20-20-19-8
Doesn't work either
Even tried as if Illinois was a red herring since it is in the beginning of both forward and reverse.
Re: States Alphabetical Mess
- Code:
MLB Teams alphabetical
Illinois Washington Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Texas Massachusetts Michigan
Cubs Mariners Diamondbacks ? Padres Rockies ? Rangers Red Sox Tigers
Thought I was on to something here but it just doesn't work for MLB but does open up a lot more ideas and could explain how Illinois
could be first alphabetically and also reverse alphabetically!
I don't think Arkansas has any professional sports teams but could be college - "Razorbacks"

Re: States Alphabetical Mess
This subsequence is completely intact in the reverse order: Washington. Arizona. Arkansas. California. Colorado. Connecticut. Texas. I'd be extremely surprised if they could find a completely DIFFERENT way to sort these and these be perfectly reversed.
And the the even smaller subset of Arizona. Arkansas. California. Colorado. Connecticut is actually in correct alphabetical order. I think it makes it even less likely that they could find a sequence of 7 states that can be perfectly reversed given the the fact that 5 of them are actually plucked out of the actual list of states intact.
Feels like maybe the clue here is either: Washington -> Texas OR it's about the states that aren't in this list. Or even more likely it's just busy work to keep you guessing until they sell 3000 copies of the book to turn a profit.

Re: States Alphabetical Mess
It should also be pointed out that the 5 correct states are correct in their placement when you list all of the states in alphabetical order. Meaning IL,WA,AZ,AR,CA,CO,CT,TX,MA,MI fits
AL,AK,AZ,AR,CA,CO,CT,DE,FL,GA and it's the same thing when she reverses their order
IL,MI,TX,CT,CO,CA,AR,AZ,WA,WI fits
GA,FL,DE,CT,CO,CA,AR,AZ,AK,AL
Not sure what it means, if anything. I'm also leaning towards distracting filler.
